Thanks for pointing out this mistake. This post has been out there a while and nobody else metioned it. I am not out there to scare anyone, but I am out there to provide important information. I am changing the title of this entry. Thanks for reading!

I understand the danger here and definitely clean my dryer vent religiously...but the headline above appears to be incorrect based on what you have quoted. The 81% statistic refers to one and two family residences accounting for 81% of dryer fires, not dryer fires accounting for 81% of home fires. Or is there a different set of stats? This seems inaccurate and a bit of a self-serving scare tactic.

Hi there,
It's great to get your perspective on the show from a viewpoint other than positive. I also enjoy the show- I've only recently heard about it, so I've seen just a few episodes- but I've been wondering what others thought about the "surreality" of this reality tv show. Overall, I agree that Holmes does a good job of pointing out issues and explaining what the steps need to be to make an appropriate correction are, but being filmed in Canada, I wondered what some of the differences might be for what guidelines are followed, what is ok, etc.

As a fellow fan of the show, I'd have to defend Mr. Holmes just a bit on the point of finding things after ripping open a wall.

When they find additional things after ripping open a wall, it is because he found some external evidence of a problem, oftentimes something that a previous inspector had missed and (at least according to Mike) should have found. Then when they move on to the corrective action portion of the show, they find additional problems.

Anyways, it's great to hear a real home inspector's viewpoint as I was wondering what your opinion would be since I first saw the show.

Hi Dave,

I too love Holmes.

I'm glad you addressed this, it drives me nuts when he rips inspectors a new one for not finding violations behind the wall he just tore down!

Keep up the good work on the blog.

Thanks for the tips! I honestly never thought about the dryer vent. That may sound silly, but it is true. I will definitely have to make sure the vent is cleared.

I think a option that adds to the advantages of asphalt is stamped asphalt. It has a lot of additional pros to just plain asphalt. Because of the StreetBond poly cement coating you never need to seal coat. The coating also allows for the flexibility of asphalt with the strength of concrete. It is almost no maintenance because the coating doesnt require seal coating ever, it helps the driveway retain its oils, and it is stain/chemcial/weather/thaw resistant. Also, with the right foundation and coating it have your asphalt driveway last almost twice as long as a regular one. And it is the least expensive as compared to all other decorative options. As a plus it is also eco friendly. Just a thought, great article.
